One of Region 10’s
most important community groups is our senior citizens. We are the region’s
designated administrator for the Area Agency on Aging (AAA).
Region 10 coordinates the development of resources and services that
tend to the needs of seniors.

| The Older Americans Act is federal legislation that
created the funding and structure for the provision of certain
community and supportive services for adults 60 years of age and
older. It was first enacted in 1965. At the federal level, the
Administration on Aging (AoA)
in the US Department of Health and Human Services, administers
the program.
Each state created a State Aging Office to administer the funds.

The CDHS designates sixteen Area
Agencies on Aging (AAA). The Region 10 League for Economic
Assistance and Planning is the AAA for the six county area of
Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel.
The following are the core services provided in Region 10 through the Older Americans
Act program:
Nutrition
Provides meals to persons 60 years of age and older in a congregate setting to
assure a nutritionally balanced diet and to provide opportunity for socialization.
Home-delivered meals also are provided to those unable to leave the home.
Support Services
Key supportive services include information and referral, homemaker services,
transportation, and legal services.
Preventative Health Services
Provides health promotion services such as nutrition screening and counseling,
medication management, and other educational and recreational activities that
enable an older adult to make healthy lifestyle choices.
National Family Caregiver Support Program
Provides support to family members who are providing daily care for an older
adult in the home. Services include information, assistance, individual counseling
and caregiver training, respite care, and supplemental services to complement
the care provided by the caregiver.
Elder Abuse Prevention and Ombudsman
Supports programs and activities that provide education and awareness on the
prevention of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation. The Ombudsman visits long-term
care facilities to provide residents with an avenue to discuss problems or concerns
and receive assistance in resolving them.
